Banish the basic
- Structure
- Bold subheads make it easy to pick out main pieces of advice.
- Sourcing
- It’s interesting that the designer is the byline on the piece. It reads almost like an “as told to,” but without the journalist intermediary. You can see the difference in home reporting versus hard news — in a different beat, Henderson’s book wouldn’t be promoted.
- Storytelling
- The visual provides structure to the story. Some element of it is referenced in each subhead.
- Style
- Fits with BH&G’s editorial goal to provide “achievable ideas for all doers.”
Designer’s playground
- Structure
- There are a lot of elements working together — lists, text boxes and grafs with subheads — that add context and draw the eye around the page.
- Sourcing
- Like “Banish the basic,” this piece features a designer, but it also has a separate byline. The designer is heard through quotes, not first-person narrative.
- Storytelling
- The visuals are strong, and text boxes give pertinent info where the decor is, which is helpful for the reader.
- Style
- Compared to the other BH&G piece, I feel like this is more profile and less how-to, but it still fits the magazine’s aesthetic.
Chic Bins
- Structure
- The subheads and “how to get it” boxes make sense for a listicle.
- Sourcing
- Just one source. I like that the writer got a photo of each bin Jackson mentioned.
- Storytelling
- I’m glad there’s an image with each entry, but I think they would be stronger with better lighting and less clutter (but I know it’s hard to stage photos inside stores!).
- Style
- Athens-specific stores make sense for local audience.
- Structure
- Traditional text interspersed with photos.
- Sourcing
- Quotes both designer and owner — helpful to hear both perspectives. I like that they include a “styled by” in the byline.
- Storytelling
- They did a good job of placing photos where a reader would start to wonder what something looks like.
- Style
- The inserts that show furniture prices match AD’s reputation as a prestigious outlet that provides “insider access to the world’s most beautiful homes.” (Everything is expensive!)
